4 DIY Summer Skin Care

Keep your skin looking flawless with our favorite DIY skincare recipes.

When summer hits, it’s often hard for skin to adjust to the new (and much warmer) climate. With that said, whether it’s a sunburn, dryness, or a major breakout, summer weather isn’t always that kind to your skin.

This season, instead of spending tons of dough on the latest and greatest skincare products, why not make your own? Yep!  That’s right – a little DIY action! The DIY concoctions below boast ingredients that you can find right in your fridge and are fun to make (and use!) too.

Ready to get radiant? Read on for the summer DIY skincare recipes we love.

Problem: Dry Skin
Solution: Cool Mint Sugar Scrub
Recipe via StyleCaster.com
This cooling scrub not only feels amazing, but it also removes dead skin cells, leaving skin soft, supple, and glowing! It’s the perfect way to revitalize sunburnt skin, too.

3 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp sunflower oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
2/3 cups white sugar
1 mint tea bag (optional)

First, blend olive oil, sunflower oil, and peppermint essential oil. Then, pour sugar into a separate bowl, cut open the mint tea bag and measure ¼ tsp leaves into the sugar and stir. Stir the sugar mixture and oil together. When showering, use 2 tbsp of scrub and rub in circular motions from the shoulders down.

Problem: Dull Skin
Solution: The Papaya Pumpkin Facial
Recipe via TeenVogue.com
If you’re looking to rock the no-makeup look, this is the potion for you! It works like an alpha-hydroxy serum, penetrating the skin, leaving it glowing, gorgeous, and ready for anything.

2/3 cup fresh papaya, mashed
15 oz can of pure pumpkin
1 egg, beaten until frothy

Mix the egg with the papaya, then add the pumpkin and whip it all together (doing this in a blender or food processor will make it extra-smooth!). Then, apply it all over the face and let it sit for five to fifteen minutes. You'll feel some tingling as the enzymes in the pumpkin go to work immediately, gently exfoliating your top layer of skin.

Problem: Breakouts
Solution: Soothing Oatmeal Mask
Recipe via inhabitat.com

If your skin’s looking rough and pimply, this calming mask will revitalize it quickly and naturally. It not only helps with eczema and acne, but it’s also extremely soothing. Love!

1/3 cup instant oatmeal
½ cup hot water
1 tbsp honey
1-2 tbsp plain, unsweetened yogurt

Add the water to your oatmeal and stir for a few moments. Add honey and yogurt and put the mixture through a blender to smooth and combine. Slather it on your face, leave on for 10 minutes, rinse with warm water, and pat dry.

Problem: Oily Skin
Solution: Cucumber & Tomato Cleanser
Recipe via StyleCraze.com

If the hot weather’s making your skin shine, this is the cleanser for you. Made with only two ingredients, it not only keeps greasiness at bay, but it also removes black circles and cools the skin, too. Enjoy!

1 Fresh Tomato
1 Fresh Cucumber

It’s simple: make a paste of the tomato and cucumber. Apply it on the face and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

The Perfect Beach Waves

Have you ever wanted to achieve the perfect beach wave without having to actually go to the beach?
Mishel and Marisa, Stylists from Salon Plum in Ladera Ranch, California are going to show us exactly hows it's done.

*NOTE-You can achieve this look with a curling iron, flat iron with round plates or a styling wand.
Step 1: Wash hair
Step 2: Apply your products. Add in a leave in conditioner and comb through the hair. We like Wonder Worker by Shu Uemura and can be purchased here: Next you will want to add in a styling product you typically use when blow drying your hair. A product we love that will make your hair shiny and will rebalance moisture levels in your hair is Essesnce Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil also by Shu Uemura which can be purchased here.

Step 3: Dry hair
Ensure your hair is 100% dry before moving on to step four.  Based on the texture of your hair you'll want to air dry for fine hair and blow dry with a round brush for course thicker hair.

Step 4:
Section off the hair and begin to curl "away from the face". For a more casual, unfinished look, leave the ends of your hair out of the curling iron.  Continue to curl the hair in sections until you have curled all pieces of the hair

Step 5:
To finish the look, add in a texture spray and scrunch into the hair to get that "just left the beach" look. We recommend, L'OREAL's Tecni Art Wild Stylers Beach Waves and can be found here.

Keep a look out for the next contribution from these talented Stylists.

Carrot Skin Care Recipes

Not only do these bright and beautiful veggies provide the nourishment our bodies crave, but they also are jam-packed with beta-carotene, Vitamin A, antioxidants, and iron - ingredients that work hard to naturally improve the skin. Benefits include: slowing down the skin’s aging process, maintaining its natural moisture, contributing to the cell renewal process, and preventing the infection of pimples and wounds. And, because carrots are readily available all year round, your local market should always have ‘em in stock and ready for you! Check out a few of our favorite carrot skincare recipes below.

Carrot Seed Facial Serum
Recipe via minimalistbeauty.com

Why we love it: Used daily, this serum boasts healing, softening, and brightening benefits. And, remember: a tiny dollop goes a very long way.

Organic rosehip seed oil
Organic jojoba oil
Organic pomegranate seed oil
Vitamin e oil
Organic lavender essential oil
Organic helichrysum essential oil
Organic carrot seed essential oil
1 oz. glass bottle with dropper

What to do:
Pour 1/2 oz (1 tablespoon) of rosehips seed oil, 1/4 oz (1/2 tablespoon) of jojoba oil, and 1/4 oz (1/2 tablespoon) of pomegranate seed oil in a 1 oz clean glass bottle using a funnel.  Now add 5-10 drops vitamin E oil, 10 drops lavender essential oil, 3 drops helichrysum essential oil, and 2 drops carrot seed essential oil.  Once closed roll the bottle or gently shake to evenly mix the ingredients.

What to do:
Mix all ingredients together to form an even mixture. Apply to clean skin and leave on for 30 minutes.  Wash off with lukewarm water.

Boil the carrot until soft and cut it in half. Mash up the half and combine with the egg yolk. Apply the mixture to your face and leave on for 20-30minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Use your favorite moisturizer to seal the deal.

Anti-aging Eye Cream
Recipe via organicauthority.com

Why we love it: First off, anything that fights off wrinkles is a must-try on our end! We love how thick and creamy this moisturizer feels under the eyes. Bonus: it’s perfect for those with sensitive skin.

What you’ll need:
3 tsp jojoba oil
3 tsp apricot-kernel oil
1 tsp beeswax
5 tsp rose water
¼ tsp borax
5 drops carrot-seed essential oil

What to do:
Put the jojoba oil, apricot-kernel oil and beeswax into a small saucepan and heat the mixture over very low heat just until the beeswax has melted. Remove from heat blend up all the ingredients with a whisk. In another small saucepan, warm the rose water over very low heat and add the borax; stir until the borax is dissolved, and remove from heat. Place the saucepan with the oils and wax into an ice bath. With a small whisk, rapidly stir wax and oils while drizzling in the rose water and borax mixture. The cream should set quickly. When the eye-wrinkle cream is cool, mix in the carrot-seed essential oil. Store the finished eye cream into a clean 2-oz. cream or cosmetic jar.
